Prerequisites and Successful Completion
The following are pre-requisites to participation in this program:
Healthcare professions who by the nature of their job, have a duty to respond and provide resuscitative efforts and participate in emergency care of children.
Current BLS Healthcare Provider Current PALS card for the Renewal course.
The following are required to successfully complete this program:
Successfully perform all core PALS skills and cases.
Score at least 84% on the PALS written examination
Objectives:
Demonstrate appropriate assessment and management techniques for the pediatric emergency with an emphasis on the following:
Assessment, using a systematic ABC approach
Determination of the patient's physiologic status
Management, using an ABC approach
Specific management techniques - airway, breathing, circulation, vascular access, medications, etc.
Reassessment after each action
Understand and demonstrate appropriate assessment and management techniques for the pediatric emergency in the following content areas:
Airway and ventilatory management using BVM and endotracheal intubations
Causes of deterioration after intubations such as tube obstruction, esophageal intubations, right main stem intubations and tension pneumothorax
Management of an obstructed airway
Assessment and treatment of hypovolemic and septic shock
Defibrillation and cardioversion
Use of resuscitation drugs
Use of a length based tape or other methods of dose calculation
Understand and demonstrate appropriate assessment and management techniques for the neonate with an emphasis on the following:
The normal newborn
The depressed infant
Meconium aspiration
Hypovolemia
Post resuscitation complications
